Dalcroze – (For ages 3-6 and 7-10 years old) The Dalcroze approach to music education teaches an understanding of music – its fundamental concepts, its expressive meanings, and its deep connections to other arts and human activities – through ground breaking techniques incorporating rhythmic movement, aural training, and physical, vocal and instrumental improvisation. www.dalcrozeusa.org
Nuthin' But Rhythm - (For All Ages) We will be exploring new ways of ensemble playing through the use of various percussion instruments in a traditional "call and response" setting. Enjoy this group class as we improvise with both unison and complex rhythms - a class that is sure to wake you up! Music reading is not required.
Theater: (for all ages, flute and non-flute students)
Join us for some silly theatrical fun. In this class we will focus on group agreement, group creation, team support and encouragement all by way of fun, non-competitive group game work. Students will use their bodies, voices and endless imagination in a YES environment to create short scenes of the own group creation. All the students need to bring is their own wonderful enthusiasm. And in true Suzuki style, parents are welcomed to join in the fun.
Art – (For ages 4-6, 7-10, and 11 and up) The "Art" of Music reminds us that there are many visual artists who use music to create their work. Picasso painted and sculpted instruments. We will use paint, sculpture and collage to create our own music! We will have fun exploring and getting messy!
Beginning Flute Ensemble - (Flute Book 1 & 2) This ensemble is ideal for the early note reader. Students will be 2 to 3 on a part and focus on tuning, ensemble playing, dynamics and rehearsal techniques. Fun? Of course! The BFE will perform on the Thursday night Ensemble Extravaganza concert and all music will be sent upon paid registration.
Fiddling Ensemble Class- (Violins) This ensemble is open to all violin students interested in exploring fiddle music from all over the world. This multi level class will allow students to enjoy working together on fiddle tunes in duets, trio, and larger ensembles. Students will have an opportunity to show off all their newly learned fiddle skills at the Thursday night Ensemble Extravaganza concert. Music for this class will be sent upon paid registration.
Viola for Violinists- (Violins) This ensemble is open to all violin students interested learing more about the viola. This class will cover basic music theory for violists and the art of playing the viola. Violas will be provided for rent from the Violin Outlet at our onsite DSI Boutique for a nominal fee. Fee will be posted soon.
Piano Ensemble- (Piano) This is an ideal class for piano students of Books 2 and up who are already proficient at reading music. Depending upon enrollment, students will be 2-3 on a part and will focus on ensemble work, listening skills and enjoying the process of working with other pianists. Faculty: Karen Huffman
Mixed Instrument Chamber Music Ensemble - (ages 10 and up) This chamber music class is open to all cello, flute, piano, and violin students ages 10 and up. An intermediate reading ability is recommended but not required. Students who register for this class will be placed with other students their age and ability level. They will be sent music prior to the institute. During the class, students will hone their chamber music skills by working both with a DSI faculty member and during independent rehearsal time. Few institutes have the ability to mix students on wind instruments, string instruments, and piano so don't miss out on this great opportunity!
